Zhi-Ping Gu

Professor Zhiping Gu graduated M.D. in 1960 and Ph.D. in pharmacology in 1964 at Shanghai First Medical University has been serving as a research scientist of Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Academia Sinica, since 1964 and is currently professor of the institute. She had a post doctor training in Worcdster Foundation for Experimental Biology and the Population Council. Center for Biomedical Research, USA from 1979 to 1981. She was deputy director of Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Academia Sinica from 1988 to 1993 and chairperson of Scientific Board, the State Key Laboratory of Drug Research, Shanghai, China. She has acted as a member of the board of many scientific organizations, such as founder member and member of international executive committee of South to South Cooperation in Reproductive Health, member of Scientific Board of the State Committee of Family Planning, the People's Republic of China, as well as member of National Committee of New Drug Evaluation, and member of National Committee of Import Drug Evaluation. In addition, she also acted as a member of Editorial Board of several scientific journals and member of societies in the field of pharmacology.
As a distinguished and accomplished scientist specializing in the area of reproductive pharmacology. She has pioneered the research of contraceptives in China since 1960's. Her achievements have resulted in the development of female post coital contraceptive pill-Anordin in China and in the advancement of Studies of the efficiency, mechanism of action, and side of effect of gossypol for the development of a male contraceptive pill. She has also carried out the studies in the development of implants for female long acting contraception and the methods for termination early pregnancy. Taking the advantage from chinese medicine, she has identified several leading comnpounds from plants for male and female contraception be cooperating with phytochemists, such as TW19, a potential male contraceptive, which is isolated from Tripterygium wilfordii. As results of her research activity, she has published over 90 scientific papers and 5 authored and edited books in the area of reproductive pharmacology. Also, as an advisor of Ph.D. students, she encouraged many young scientist into her fields of research interest, in particular the field of reproductive pharmacology.
