AREAS OF RESEARCH EXPERTISE
Male reproductive health, medicine and biology involving research in basic, clinical and public health domains.
Physiology, pharmacology and toxicology of androgens, including genetic mouse models of androgen action, hormonal regulation of the testis, prostate and ovary, detection of androgens in sports doping and clinical research into androgen pharmacology, hormonal male contraception, male ageing and prostate disease.

BRIEF BIO
Professor David Handelsman is the inaugural Professor/Director, ANZAC Research Institute (1998), heading its Andrology Laboratory as well as the Andrology Department, Concord Hospital. His background training was in medicine (Univ of Melbourne), internal medicine speciality in Endocrinology (FRACP) and research (NHMRC Neil Hamilton Fairley Fellow, Wellcome Senior Research Fellow) and he has worked in the USA, Australia and Germany. He has served on numerous research and health policy advisory bodies including WHO Human Reproduction Programme (1988-1994), Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (1994-1998), President of the Endocrine Society of Australia (1992-4), Secretary of the International Society of Andrology (1997-2001), expert advisory panel of the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee (1999-present) and Anti-Doping Research Panel (2002-present), Board of Andrology Australia (Australian Centre of Excellence in Male Reproductive Health) (1999-present) and inaugural Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men’s Health at University of Adelaide (2007-present). He has appeared as a Crown expert witness before Full Bench of the Federal Court of Australia, the highest court hearing testimony from non legal experts. He was also invited to present evidence to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing’s review of impotence medications.
After appointment as Associate Professor of Medicine (1989), he became Australia’s first Professor of Andrology (1996) when appointed to a Personal Chair in Reproductive Endocrinology and Andrology at the University of Sydney. In 1998 he was appointed inaugural Director of the ANZAC Research Institute responsible for design, building and inauguration of a new medical research institute at Concord Hospital. This move to Concord Hospital in 1999 created the first hospital Andrology department in Australia. Subsequently together with Bernie Banton he spearheaded development of the Asbestos Disease Research Institute, a new $12 million research building development.
His research has been recognized by the award of the Royal Australasian College of Physician’s 1994 Susman Prize for original medical research, the inaugural AMA Men’s Health Award in 2003 and elected an Honorary Life Member of the Endocrine Society of Australia in 2008. He serves on the Editorial Board of concurrently the world’s top clinical and basic Endocrinology journals (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and Endocrinology), is Associate Editor (Male Reproduction) for Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and Deputy Editor, Asian Journal of Andrology. He has contributed two chapters (Androgen Physiology, Pharmacology & Abuse; Male Contraception) to the major textbook of Endocrinology, De Groot’s Endocrinology, through its last 3 editions and its web version Endotext, three chapters to the European equivalent (Wass & Shalet’s Oxford Textbook of Endocrinology and Diabetes) and a chapter (Ageing Male Reproductive System) to the major textbook of Reproductive Biology (Knobil & Neill, Physiology of Reproduction).
