P Ganesan Adaikan

SUMMARY
Dr. P Ganesan Adaikan, PhD, DSc, ABS (USA) is a Professor and Head, Section of Sexual Medicine and is a Board Certified (USA) Clinical Sexologist in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, National University Hospital, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, 5, Lower Kent Ridge Road, Singapore 119074. He is a world renowned expert in the field of sexual medicine and is recognized for his pioneering contributions to the physiopharmacology of penile erection and pharmacological treatment for erectile dysfunction. He has won several international awards including the prestigious Ginestie Prize (1986) in Prague and Emil Tanagho Prize (2006) in Cairo from the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), American Medical Systems–Excellence in Impotence Research Best Paper Award (1997) from the Asia-Pacific Society for Sexual Medicine (APSSM) and the Benjamin Henry Sheares Memorial Lecture Award and Gold Medal (1987) from the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Singapore.
He was the first in the world to identify the neurogenic non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic pathway and the modulator/transmitter nitric oxide and several other receptors/mediators in the human penis. This initial discovery was a major impetus to worldwide pharmacological research among the fraternity in this area and eventual development of drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. He also pioneered the identification of the mechanism of erection and intracavernous use of PGE1 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (covered by 11 publications and 220 citations from these articles) and thereafter, a series of pathophysiological elucidations of impotence and in recent time, identification of gaseous hydrogen sulphide as the modulator and co-transmitter for penile erection. His current focus of research is on stem cell, hydrogen sulphide therapy, pathophysiology of chloride channels and aspects of female sexual dysfunctions.
He holds a recently approved Singapore and US patent (09/714,614) for the discovery of pro-endogenous pharmacotherapy for the treatment of Priapism through National University of Singapore.
Teachings:
He has been a lecturer to MBBS, MMed, Pharmacy and Advanced nursing courses and is a teacher and research supervisor in the field of sexual medicine to several PhD, MD, MSc and clinical MSc students at the National University of Singapore and other universities and examiner for post-graduate students in these areas.
Publications:
Dr Adaikan has published more than 180 scientific articles in leading peer-reviewed international journals. He has delivered more than 600 invited lectures and presentations around the world in the area of sexual medicine.
Clinical Services:
With his relentless scientific pursuit in the area of erectile dysfunction, Prof Adaikan established the Male and Female Sexual Dysfunction section in the Andrology clinic of the department at the National University Hospital in 1986 - which is fully functional to-date.
Professional Societies:
Prof Adaikan was the first Asian President and now the Past President of the International Society for Sexual Medicine. He is also in the Nomination Committee of ISSM and in the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Sexual Medicine and 5 other international journals. Prof Adaikan is the Past President of Asia-Oceania Federation for Sexology and current President of Society for the Study of Andrology and Sexology, Singapore (SSASS) which he founded in 1997. He is also the Founder-Executive Committee member of the Asia Pacific Society for Sexual Medicine (1987). In addition, his current positions include: Honorary President, Asia Pacific Society for Sexual Medicine, President and Associate Secretary and Advisory Committee Member of World Association for Sexual Health (WAS).
Courses/Congresses conducted:
Since 1993, he has organised (2-days) annual CME training courses for doctors in Singapore and the Asian region on male and female sexual dysfunction (13 workshop/symposia to date).
Prof Adaikan was the organizing Chairman/President of the 6th World Meeting on Impotence (1994), 7th Asian Congress of Sexology (2002) and the 12th Biennial Meeting of APSSM (2009) held in Singapore. As the President of ISSM (2004-2006), he was the co-chair of the 12th World Congress of Sexual Medicine held in Cairo, Egypt in September 2006. He was also the ISSM’s Scientific Chair and Co-Chair respectively for the 13th Joint World Meeting of ISSM and ESSM in Brussels (2008) and 3rd International Consultation in Sexual Medicine in Paris (2009).
Consultancy:
Over the years, Dr Adaikan has been a consultant, thought leader and resource speaker on drugs for several pharmaceutical industries in the areas of cardiovascular, respiratory and sexual medicine at the international level.

  • Society for the Study of Andrology and Sexology, Singapore (SSASS): He is the founder of this society. His positions include Past-President (2003-2005), President (1999-2003; 2009-) and Vice-President (1997-1999). He affiliated this society with the International Society of Andrology and World Association for Sexology. Through this society, he has been continuously involved in creating awareness in sexual medicine through a variety of activities for professionals as well as general public; this includes publication of the official newsletter (SSASS Press) and periodic public forums conducted on current issues in this area.

OVER THE YEARS, HIS INTENSIVE RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF SEXUAL MEDICINE HAS LED TO THE FOLLOWING DISCOVERIES

  • Discovery of non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic neurotransmission and various receptors (1978), establishment of hypothesis on the autonomic control of penile erection and identification of nitric oxide as the neurotransmitter of erection and mediator of cGMP pathway in the human penis (1991)

  • Pioneer identification of the mechanism of action in the corpus cavernosum and clinical use of PGE1 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This has been an important drug in the management of impotence (by intracavernous and intraurethral routes) around the world.

  • In recent time, identification of the modulatory role of Hydrogen Sulphide as co-transmitter of penile erection.

  • He holds a recently approved Singapore and US patent (09/714,614) for the discovery of pro-endogenous pharmacotherapy for the treatment of Priapism through National University of Singapore.

RESEARCH GRANTS
He has been awarded more than 12 scientific research grants amounting to about S$2.5 million over the years that include local/international industrial invitation for drug testing / clinical trials and research on male and female sexual dysfunction.
